From Homelessness to Hope: James Porter Celebrates 20 Years of Service at Loaves and Fishes.

Over twenty years ago, James Porter was homeless, living in abandoned buildings, and relying on Loaves and Fishes of Contra Costa (LFCC) for daily meals. Today, he is our Mobile Unit Driver/Server, delivering meals to those in need in our community. His journey is a testament to resilience, transformation, and the power of community support.

When James fell on hard times, he was unable to support himself due to alcohol abuse. For a year and a half, he lived in abandoned buildings, moving from one to another when they were torn down. He carried all his belongings in two five-gallon buckets and depended on LFCC’s Pittsburg Dining Room for daily nourishment.

Determined to rebuild his life, James sought help for his alcohol dependency and enrolled in a life skills program at St. Vincent de Paul. Through this program, he gained valuable job skills and joined LFCC. He has held many roles over the years, from Cook to Logistics Manager, and now as the driver of our new mobile unit, ensuring meals reach those who cannot travel to our dining rooms.

For James, working at LFCC is more than a job – it’s a way to give back. He understands firsthand the struggles of those experiencing food insecurity because he was once in the same position. Reflecting on his journey, he says, “When I go through the Pittsburg Dining Room, I see a lot of people who knew me back then. I thank God for the opportunity to get my life back together.”

James Porter’s story is one of hope and perseverance, a powerful reminder of the impact LFCC has on those in need. As he celebrates 20 years of service, his dedication continues to inspire, proving that with support and determination, second chances are possible.
